St. Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St. Edmunds
Michelle Walton - soprano Toby Stafford-Allen - baritone
Bury St. Edmunds Bach Choir and Orchestra Philip Reed - Conductor
Marking the 50th anniversary of his death, this concert includes two pieces by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The Hundredth Psalm, a rousing setting for choir and orchestra, was sung at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Tallis Fantasia, his sublime piece for string orchestra, was inspired by his love of Tudor chamber music. As examples of this period, the choir sings two well known motets by Farrant and Tallis.
Then follows Peter Aston's The True Glory, specially orchestrated for the Bury Bach Choir to mark the composer's 70th birthday.
The major work is Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. Of the many settings of the Requiem, this is probably the most widely loved. This eloquent piece has a unique purity and directness of expression that make it a firm favourite with audiences.
Prepare to be profoundly moved by the intimacy and ethereal beauty of this humble and elegant masterpiece.
