An Extraordinary Evening of Sacred Music
This concert is devoted to Johann Sebastian Bach’s last and greatest sacred work, the Mass in B minor, once described as “the greatest musical artwork of all times and people”.
Following established tradition, Bach forged much of this enthralling and monumental Mass by reworking selected pieces from his enormous repertoire of earlier compositions. That a work of such splendour, symmetry and logic could derive from an assemblage of earlier works is astounding and demonstrates vividly the fundamental harmony governing Bach’s creative genius. And what a wonderfully contrasting and thrilling ride it makes for today’s audiences! The singing is impassioned, yet somehow innocent. The celebration is loud yet religious, devout yet festive. The emotions are solemn yet sometimes almost sensual. Above all, the pure melodious inspiration of the music guarantees an uplifting experience that you will savour and enjoy.
Bury Bach Choir looks forward to performing this magnificent work, which we last performed twenty years’ ago. We will be joined by four superb soloists, and by The Geldart Ensemble who will play period instruments to honour the textures and colours that Bach himself would have heard. This is Bach at his absolute best, challenging for the choir, and inspiring, enthralling, exhilarating for the audience. Come and join us for an unforgettable evening.
